How to run a patent search before you fund the build

The first-pass patent search SINLE runs before a build: the stuck job in plain words, synonyms, claims, a one-page note. Find the fence before Spark becomes Invent.

Patent search is how you find out whether the path you want to invent is already fenced. It will not tell you if the idea is good. It will tell you if you are about to spend six months — and an Invent — building someone else’s claim.

SINLE Innovation Agency does this before Spark-level money becomes a build. The search is cheap. The surprise after a live URL is not. We would rather write a no on a page you keep than ship a system you cannot sell.

A worked shape (not a client story)

Job: the plant still logs downtime in a shared sheet, then someone retypes it into the ERP on Friday. Proposed bet: a cell-side log that writes the reason code once.

Bad search: “AI manufacturing platform SINLE.” Useless. Better search: downtime log, reason code capture, machine state, Andon, OEE event. Then the CPC class on the closest hit. Then claims. If a live claim already covers “operator enters a stop reason at the cell into a system of record,” the bet reshapes — maybe the value is the human lock and the ownership of the data, not the log itself — or the bet dies. That is de-risking. Building the log anyway is pride.

What the Spark note must contain

The job in one line. The search strings you actually ran. The desks (Google Patents, USPTO, Espacenet). The five closest hits with a pile label. The decision. The kill rule this search now feeds. If any of that is missing, you have a vibe. We will not pretend it is discovery.

What a first pass is — and is not

It is for the operator who has to decide yes, no, or not yet. It is not a legal product. If the note says blocking, we stop the build and tell you to talk to a patent attorney. If it says nothing close, you still have technical and market risk. You just removed one expensive way to be wrong. That is the only promise. You own the note. We do not own your IP strategy.

What you should be holding at the end

A dated note: the job in one line, the search strings, the desks you used, five hits with a pile label, and a decision — proceed, reshape, stop, or attorney. That note can still change the spend. A screenshot in a slide cannot.

We will not clear a product. A blocking pile means we stop the build and tell you to hire a patent attorney. An empty page is not clearance. It only removes one way to be wrong.

The sequence

Do these in order. Skip a line and you are back to a workshop.

  1. 01

Start from the stuck job, not the brand

“Dispatch still lives in a sheet and WhatsApp.” That is searchable. “SINLE-class agentic platform” is not. If you cannot say the mechanism without the product name, you are not ready to search — or to hire us.

  2. 02

    Write three synonym lists

The floor word, the vendor word, the paper word. Example: “job ticket / work order / dispatch log.” Search all three or you will miss a fence with a different label.

  3. 03

Search more than one public desk

Google Patents, USPTO Patent Public Search, Espacenet. Same query on each. When a close hit shows a CPC class, search that class. Lucky keywords are not a method.

  4. 04

    Read independent claims, not titles

Titles sell. Abstracts pitch. Claims fence. Ask: does this claim cover the job we were about to put in a statement of work? If yes, stop the week.

  5. 05

    Sort hits into four piles

Blocking — reshape or lawyer. Adjacent — learn, do not panic. Expired or abandoned — maybe free to try, still not a product. Different job, similar word — ignore. Only pile one should scare an Invent.

  6. 06

Write the one-page note SINLE keeps with the Spark

What is already owned. What looks free to try. What we still do not know. Date, job line, search strings, top five hits, decision: proceed, reshape, stop, or attorney. You keep this page even if we decline the build.

  7. 07

    Decide before the prototype budget

If we take the work, Spark applies toward Invent. If the search says no, you still have the note. Do not “search later.” Later you will be defending a pretty demo.

  8. 08

Hand blocking hits to a patent attorney — not to us as lawyers

SINLE Technologies LLC is an innovation company. We de-risk the bet. We do not issue freedom-to-operate opinions, file applications, or prosecute claims. When money, a product name, or a country sale is on the table, that hire is the next scope — theirs, not ours.

Common mistakes

  • Searching only your product name

Nobody else used your name. They used the job. Search the job.

  • Stopping at the first empty results page

Bad query, empty page. Try the floor word. Try the class code. Then believe the empty page.

  • Reading five titles and calling it done

Titles are marketing. Independent claims are the fence. If you did not open claims, you did not search.

  • Asking the agency to “clear” the product

We will not. We will tell you the pile the hit landed in, and whether we still take the build. Clearance is counsel.

Keep these

  • A first-pass search is part of how SINLE says yes or no. It is not a legal product.
  • Search the job. Competitors used the job, not your future brand.
  • The output is a dated note that can still change the spend. A screenshot in a slide cannot.

Do this before you spend

  1. 01Write the mechanism in the words of the job. Drop the product name.
  2. 02Run the same query on Google Patents, USPTO, and Espacenet.
  3. 03Open claims on the closest hit. Label the pile before you fund a prototype.

A first-pass search on the stuck job sits inside Spark. If you only want a search with no job and no kill rule, you want a librarian or an attorney.

Questions

How do you use patent search to de-risk R&D?
Write the mechanism in the words of the job, search public databases with synonyms and class codes, read independent claims, and write a one-page note before you fund the prototype. At SINLE that note is part of Spark: what we would build, and what we would not.
Will SINLE do the patent search for us?
A first-pass search on the stuck job is part of discovery when the unknown includes IP. It is how we protect the scope, not a standalone legal service. If you only want a search with no job and no kill rule, you want a librarian or an attorney — not the agency.

Spark is $750 and includes the first-pass note when IP is part of the unknown. You keep the page. We do not file patents.
