How to de-risk R&D
How SINLE de-risks research and development: name the stuck job, run a patent search and a thin Tuesday test, write a kill rule, then spend. A bigger lab is not the method.
Most R&D spend dies for a boring reason: the company funded a feeling. De-risking is the opposite. You write the ways the bet can fail, then you pay for the cheapest proof first so the expensive one never starts.
SINLE Technologies LLC runs that sequence as the work of SINLE Innovation Agency — not as a legal product and not as a campus. Mohamed Bellouch is a technological innovation engineer. The test we care about is the same one on the rest of this site: a stuck job, a prototype someone can fail, a system people still use on Friday, owned by you.
Four fences, four cheap tests
Technical: the mechanism might not work on dirty inputs. Test with a thin lie on the worst Tuesday you can afford — night shift, bad photos, the skeptical operator.
Market: the people who do the job might not keep the new way. Count what they do, not what they say in a workshop.
IP: someone already claimed the path. That is patent search before you spend, and patent monitoring while you spend.
Operations: the floor cannot run it without a hero. If it needs the inventor in the room, it is not ready for Invent.
Where this sits in a SINLE engagement
You send the stuck job. We say yes or we say no. If the path is unclear, Spark is $750: we map the workflow, run the first-pass search and the kill rule, and write what we would build and what we would not. You keep the note. If we take the work, that fee goes toward Invent.
Invent is $10–25k when the bet survived: a written statement of work, milestone billing, the system on a domain you own. Pod is $3,000 a month after, so the watch and the engineering do not die at launch. Nothing is charged before you approve a page. Chat is not a scope.
What we will not call de-risking
A bigger lab. A chief of innovation with nobody who can stop. Filing a patent so the about page looks serious. A six-month “discovery sprint” with no kill date. If the search and the Tuesday test do not change the scope, you did not de-risk anything. You bought theatre. We will decline that brief in writing.
The spend order
Pay for the cheap nos first. Can it fail on a dirty Tuesday. Will they keep it. Does someone already own the path. Can the floor run it without a hero. Spark is $750 to map those and write invent, reshape, or no. You keep the note. Invent is only the build after the unknown is cheaper. Pod keeps a live watch after, at $3,000 a month.
A bigger lab is not the method. A kill rule on the same page as the hope is.
The sequence
Do these in order. Skip a line and you are back to a workshop.
- 01
Write the stuck job in one line
Who does what today, where it waits, what the unofficial spreadsheet still does. SINLE will not start a Spark without this sentence. A product name is not a job.
- 02
Write the unknown next to it
What a competent team still cannot honestly answer by Friday. If they would be unsurprised, you need builders — not an R&D budget.
- 03
List the expensive ways to be wrong
It cannot work on a dirty Tuesday. The people who do the job will not keep it. Someone already owns the path. The floor cannot run it without a hero. Those are four different spends. Fund the cheap ones first.
- 04
Run a first-pass patent search before Spark becomes a build
Public desks, synonyms, claims not titles. At SINLE this sits inside discovery: what we would build, and what we would not, because the path is already fenced.
- 05
Fail the job with a thin lie the same week
Paper log, a jig, a concierge, a one-page flow. If they will not live with the slow version, they will not pay for Invent.
- 06
Write the kill rule on the same page as the hope
Date and evidence. Hours, scrap, adoption, or a blocking claim. “We’ll know” is how hobbies get funded. We put this in the written note you keep.
- 07
Only then scope the real system
Invent is the build after the unknown is cheaper. Nothing is billed before you approve a statement of work. If the tests say no, you get a written no — and you keep the Spark note.
- 08
Watch the fence while the bet is live
Patent monitoring on this job, monthly, next to Pod hours — not a dashboard of the whole industry. Kill the watch when the bet is dead or the design is known.
Common mistakes
Hiring the lab before the sentence
A chief of innovation with no stuck job will spend. They will not de-risk. Write the line first.
Searching after the prototype is pretty
You will defend the spend. Search when the idea is still cheap to throw away — that is what Spark is for.
Treating a Google Patents screenshot as clearance
A first pass tells SINLE whether to reshape or stop. Freedom to operate is a patent attorney. We will tell you when to hire one. We will not pretend we are one.
Calling a workshop de-risking
Sticky notes do not fail a claim or a Tuesday. If the test cannot be wrong, it is theatre.
Keep these
- De-risking at SINLE is a sequence of cheap nos, then a scoped yes. It is not a lab tour.
- Patent search and patent monitoring treat IP as an unknown in the job. Filing a patent for the about page is inventory.
- Spark maps the unknown. Invent ships what survived. Pod keeps a live watch. We are not a law firm.
Do this before you spend
- 01Write the stuck job and the unknown on one page.
- 02List the four ways the bet can be expensive and wrong.
- 03Fund the cheap test before you fund the prototype.
Send the job. Spark is the de-risk. If the tests say no, you get a written no and you keep the note.
Questions
- How do you de-risk R&D?
- Name the stuck job and the unknown. List the expensive ways to be wrong. Run a patent search and a thin test before you fund a prototype. Write a kill rule. Monitor new filings while the bet is live. At SINLE that sequence is Spark, then a written scope or a written no — not a bigger department.
- Does SINLE file patents?
- No. SINLE Innovation Agency de-risks and engineers the job: search, test, scope, ship a system you own. Filing, prosecution, and freedom-to-operate opinions are a patent attorney. We will say when that hire is the next step. We will not sell you a filing as innovation.
Next how-to
- How to run a patent search before you fund the buildThe first-pass patent search SINLE runs before a build: the stuck job in plain words, synonyms, claims, a one-page note. Find the fence before Spark becomes Invent.
- How to monitor patents while an R&D bet is liveHow SINLE keeps a live R&D bet from walking into a new fence: the same search, monthly, scored in one line, next to Pod — not an industry dashboard.
- How to stand up an R&D podDo not hire a chief of innovation first. One unknown, two or three people, a kill rule on day one, and a door into the real work.
