Innovation workshops vs shipping software

Sticky notes are cheap. A production URL is not. Why design sprints fail after Monday, and what to buy if you actually need a product.

Innovation · Design sprint · Product · Agency

The innovation workshop is a product. It has a facilitator, a mural, a photo for LinkedIn. It rarely has a repository. Companies buy it because shipping is frightening and a week in a room feels like progress.

We do not sell workshops as a line item. If we cannot see a system in the brief, we review and we may say no. If we can, the first week is a thin slice in production clothing — not a deck of how we might someday build.

When a workshop is honest

Five people disagree about the customer. You need one afternoon and a decision. That is management. Hire a good manager. Do not hire a studio to run your politics.

When a workshop is a stall

You already know the leak: DMs, a sheet, three vendors, a hire you cannot find. Another canvas will not close it. Engineering will. Product innovation is the close.

What we do instead of a sprint theatre

A call. A written scope. Weekly increments. You see the product while it can still change. You own it on final payment. If you wanted the photo, we are the wrong room.

The steps — do these in order

  1. 01

If you need alignment, run a meeting

Do not buy a branded sprint to decide whether the problem is real.

  2. 02

If you need a product, buy a SOW

Screens, dates, price, ownership. Not a “phase 0” that never ends.

  3. 03

    Cap discovery

Days, not quarters. Discovery that cannot name the job is stalling.

  4. 04

Require a clickable thing in week one

    Even ugly. Especially ugly.

  5. 05

    Decline unlimited ideation

If the vendor sells energy, not software, leave.

If this is the work you need, write. You get a written scope, a price in USD, and a site or product you own. Nothing is billed before you approve it.
