Incremental vs disruptive innovation

Most valuable work is incremental. Disruption is when the old job dies. Do not use the word until a customer actually leaves the old way.

Incremental · Disruptive · Strategy

Incremental vs disruptive innovation is a useful split when it changes how you judge a bet. Incremental: same job, better numbers. Disruptive: the customer’s old job goes away, often starting in a worse, cheaper, or smaller corner.

Incremental is not a slur

A 20-minute changeover cut is how a mill pays for itself. Calling it “just incremental” is how executives ignore the work that funds the company. Do the incremental list in public.

Disruption is rare and rude

It looks weak at first: worse specs, different customer, embarrassing price. If your idea is a better mill for the same buyer, it is incremental with a loud deck. That can still be a good business. It is not disruption.

How to tell if this is a real job

“Incremental vs disruptive innovation” only matters if someone already does the work and it hurts. Write the job in one line. Write who does it on a Tuesday. Write what they do when the new thing is down. If the answer is “we wait,” you have a toy. If the answer is “we lose a day,” you have a product problem.

Prototype in the open, production on a domain you own

A prototype is a test you can fail. Production is a URL, a login, a bill, and a person who can turn it off. Do not mix them. Do not call a deck a prototype. Do not call a prototype a company.

Weekly increments you can click. Acceptance is a non-engineer completing the job. You own the repo on final payment. SINLE Technologies LLC bills in USD against a written scope.

What we decline

A brochure with a new logo. A chatbot with no job. “The Uber of” a market you do not serve. If the next step is a system a company can run — with a human lock on money and sends — write.

The steps — do these in order

  1. 01

    List incremental bets

Hours, scrap, changeover. Fund these on a clock.

  2. 02

    List true disruption tests

Would a customer stop buying the old job? If no, it is not disruption.

  3. 03

    Keep them in different rooms

A disruption bet cannot be measured like a fixture. Do not kill it with the same KPI — or protect it from all KPIs.

If the next step is a system you can keep — a prototype in production, a test you can measure, a product with a written scope — write. Nothing is billed before you approve it.
