Website vs web application: which one you should actually buy

A website explains and takes the first action. A web app is where the work lives after that. Mixing them up is how you overpay for a brochure or under-scope a product.

Web application · Website · Product · Origin

“We need a website” is how most briefs start. Half of them need an application and do not have the word. The other half need five honest pages and get sold a “platform.”

A website is public, mostly one-way, maybe a booking or a payment. A web application is a tool people sign into. Different product. Different price. Different SOW.

Buy a website when the job is to be found and to start

Offer, proof you are allowed to show, contact, booking or checkout. Origin from $2,500. That is a conversion site, not an operating system.

Buy a web app when the job continues after the click

Quotes, jobs, status, files, a customer login, an agent on a queue. That is Sovereign. If you only needed the public page, we will not upsell you a login.

The expensive confusion

Agencies sell “custom websites” that are WordPress with a plugin maze. Software shops sell “MVPs” that are landing pages with Auth0 taped on. Ask: does a stranger finish in one visit, or does a user return to work? That question is the quote.

The steps — do these in order

  1. 01

If strangers must understand the offer, buy a website

Origin. Pages, SEO, a form or checkout. You own the repo.

  2. 02

If staff or customers must come back to do a job, buy an app

    Login, roles, records. Sovereign.

  3. 03

If you need both, say both on the call

A marketing site and a portal are two deliverables. One invoice can hold two lines. One fake “platform” cannot.

  4. 04

Do not dress a brochure as software

A dashboard with no records is still a website. We will say so.

  5. 05

Do not dress software as five extra pages

A job queue is not page twelve. It is a product.

If this is the work you need, write. You get a written scope, a price in USD, and a site or product you own. Nothing is billed before you approve it.
