AI · Innovation · Human lock
How AI is changing innovation: the cost of a first draft and a first detection dropped. The cost of being wrong did not. You can try more bets. You still have to kill the ones that fail a Tuesday.
Faster prototypes, same adoption problem
A model can sketch a UI, a procedure, a defect flag. Someone still has to live with it. Innovation did not become “type a prompt.” It became easier to reach the moment of truth — and easier to drown in demos.
Do not automate the lock
Refunds, cycle-start on an unproven setup, emails to a customer list: these are locks. AI can draft. A named person still sends. That is not Luddism. That is how you still have a company after the model hallucinates a price.
The old loop still wins
Stuck job. Small test. Metric. Keep or kill. AI sits inside the test, not above it. If your innovation strategy is “add AI,” you do not have a strategy. You have a vendor meeting.
Put the lock in the scope, not in the pitch
For “How AI is changing innovation,” the model may draft. A person clicks before money, a send, a calendar write, or a clinical-looking message. If a vendor boasts fully autonomous refunds or diagnosis, leave.
Name the processor in the privacy policy. Name the model family in the SOW. A vendor change is a change order. Keys stay on the server. Cost has a cap and an alert.
Evals before customers
Twenty anonymized real examples. Run them on every prompt change. Failures block the release. If you cannot show the set, you do not have a feature. You have a demo that will lie in production.
When AI is the wrong spend
If the site is slow, the NAP is wrong, or the sheet is the source of truth, fix that first. A model on top of a mess writes a faster mess. We will say so on the call.
The steps — do these in order
- 01
Name a clerk job
Draft, tag, detect, summarize. Not “run the company.”
- 02
Keep a human lock on money and sends
If it cannot be undone on Friday, a person still approves.
- 03
Test on your worst data
Night shift, messy PDFs, oily parts. Demo data is a lie.
- 04
Measure hours returned, not “AI adoption”
Adoption of a toy is not innovation.
If the next step is a system you can keep — a prototype in production, a test you can measure, a product with a written scope — write. Nothing is billed before you approve it.

AI quality inspection in manufacturing: a camera with a human lock

Technological innovation
What is technological innovation?
A working definition: a new or better way to do a job that someone actually uses. Not a patent, not a demo, not a slide.
Testing
How to test an innovation before building it
A test is a user, a fake or thin version, and a number. If you cannot fake it this week, you are not ready to build.
