Search “custom website vs Squarespace” and you get designers who sell Squarespace, or directories comparing Wix to WordPress. The useful split is not the logo on the editor. It is whether you can leave with the site.
Squarespace is good software for a brochure you are willing to rent. A custom site, the way we build it, is Next.js on a host you control. You get the code when the last invoice is paid. Those are different products. Mixing them in a “which builder is best” table is how people stay stuck.
Stay on Squarespace if
You need a site this month, the offer is simple, and you are fine paying rent. You do not need a customer login, a peculiar booking rule, or a checkout Stripe has to review against your legal pages. You can edit a page without waiting on us. That is a legitimate business.
Leave when the template is the bottleneck
The theme fights the brand. The form cannot do the job. SEO is a blog you do not write because the site is slow or duplicated. You want Stripe on a URL reviewers can open, with refunds in writing. You want to fire the vendor and still have a website on Monday.
That is Origin or a Sovereign, not a different Squarespace template. Switching templates inside the same rental is not a strategy.
- Custom: you own the repo, the design files, and the domain setup.
- Squarespace: they own the platform. You own the content until you do not.
- WordPress-on-someone’s-hosting: often the worst of both — complexity without ownership.

We do not rebuild you on another page builder and call it custom. We do not hold the site on an account you cannot access. If you want us after launch, that is Relay — $1,500 a month, 30 days’ notice, written down.

Say whether you need to leave with the site
If the answer is yes, a builder is a delay. If the answer is “not this year,” Squarespace can be honest rent.

List the one thing the template cannot do
A booking flow that is yours. Checkout with your policies. A page Google can actually rank. If there is no such thing, stay on the builder.

Check who owns the account
If the designer’s login is the only login, you do not have a site. You have a vendor.

Price the rebuild, not the monthly fee
Three years of Squarespace plus a designer on top is often more than Origin you keep.

Scope the move as a project
Content you keep, URLs you redirect, a repo in your name. We write that down before anyone pays.
